Kayaker dies in high waters of Kern River in California, sheriff says. 4 more rescued

River Drowning

A kayaker died and four more had to be rescued from the high-flowing Kern River, the Tulare County Sheirff’s Office said Wednesday.

The Swiftwater Rescue Team was called to the Kern River in the area of Ant Canyon near Kernville about 5:30 p.m. after the five kayakers lost their equipment and fell out of their raft, the sheriff’s office said.

The water rescue team saved four of them but were working Wednesday evening to recover the fifth kayaker, who had drowned, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Mike Boudreaux in a news release said the water is dangerous following the amount of water that fell early this year.

“The water is colder and faster than usual,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please avoid the waterways completely.”
