Councilmembers, community support LGBTQ+ pride in Fresno with flag raising ceremony

While Fresno’s Pride month celebrations kicked off last weekend, the city showed its support of the LGBTQ+ community with a pair of commemorations this week.

On Thursday, the city officially proclaimed June as LGBTQ+ Pride month during with a presentation during its council meeting.

On Friday, a group of councilmembers, including vice president Annalisa Pera, raised the rainbow pride flag in a ceremony at city hall.

This is the third year the city has flown the flag in support the LGBTQ+ community, following a contentious debate on the issue in 2021. Fresno flies a variety of flags outside City Hall to commemorate dates, events, cultures and nations that are important to the city. That includes flags for Pride and Juneteenth.

The county, meanwhile, proposed an ordinance last month to permit only the U.S. flag and the California state flag to be flown on its official flagpoles.
