CHP officer injured in crash during pursuit on Fresno street. A driver was cited for DUI
A California Highway Patrol officer was injured Monday evening when his vehicle was hit and slammed into a pole on Fresno streets.
The collision happened about 7 p.m. at the intersection of Fresno Street and McKinley Avenue.
Fresno Police Lt. Zeb Price said the CHP officer was en route to help Fresno Police officers who were pursuing a stolen vehicle westbound on McKinley.
The officer came to a red light at McKinley and stopped before continuing into the intersection.
A driver northbound on Fresno Street hit the CHP cruiser in the rear end in the intersection, Price said, sending the cruiser into a street pole.
The officer was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for complaint of pain. The driver of the other car was OK, but Price said that driver was cited for DUI and also had a suspended license. He was released to family.
Officers will continue the investigation.
“Our policy is pretty clear, if the individual is cooperative and there isn’t as far as combative nature, there’s no other criminal charges. If it’s safe and they do have family present to take responsibility of that individual, then we will cite and release to family,” Price said.
“Luckily, the officer made it enough through the intersection where the other vehicle traveling northbound struck the back end of the vehicle.”
Price said he had no additional information on the pursuit.
