Want to see folkloric dances from all of México’s 32 states? Here’s how and when.
For those whose knowledge of Mexican folkloric dancing is limited to knowing the different between the boot-stomping polkas of Chihuahua and the skirt-twirling dances of Jalisco, the Central High Danzantes de Tláloc has a treat in store.
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the group will perform a dance from each of the 32 Mexican states at its May 26 show at the east campus’ Performing Arts Center. Showtime is 7 p.m.
“For our 20th anniversary, we did something similar to what we’re doing this year,” said director Rosa Amelia González Madrigal. “We presented 32 different styles, but it was not one for every state. We happened to have 32 costumes for 32 different styles.”
Not all the states were represented then.
That means that some dances that have never been performed in Fresno will make their debut: ‘Danza de Cuchillos’ from Tlaxcala, ‘Danza de Flashicos’ from Querétaro, and ‘Las Tetelcingas’ from Morelos.
The highlight, however, will most likely be the opening number to ‘Jarabe Tapatío,’ a well-known dance from Jalisco. The twist is that ballet dancer Valeria Suárez will perform.
“The first time ‘Jarabe Tapatío’ was presented on a professional stage, it was performed as a ballet piece,” said González Madrigal.
During the 1800s, she said, “traditional music was not very popular in México.”
Russian ballerina Ana Pavlova changed all that in1908 when she created and performed a ballet choreography based on ‘Jarabe Tapatío’ at Centro Bellas Artes.
That gave rise to professional dance groups that performed the dances that were once considered only for the lower class.
“Today, Mexican folklore is regarded as one of the most intricate art forms and continues to be researched by dancers and dance teachers internationally,” said González Madrigal. “Although it has become a more traditional art form now, the roots of Mexican folkloric dance stem from its fusion with ballet.”
