Fire crew pulls body from canal in Fresno, spokesperson says. Police investigate scene

Few details were immediately available, but Fresno Fire Department firefighters pulled a body from a canal in west Fresno on Thursday, a spokesperson said.

Firefighters and police were called to the canal at Marks and Nielsen avenues about 7 a.m. after a body was spotted in the water, Fresno Fire Department spokesperson Christine Wilson confirmed.

No details on the victim were immediately available. Fresno police were at the scene Thursday to investigate.

The Fresno Fire Department on Sunday abandoned a search for a person who was reported to have fallen into a canal in the Tower District.

Officials have not connected that person to the body found Thursday, but Wilson said in both cases the victim was reported to be a man in a white T-shirt. It was also the same waterway, she said.

The department has cautioned residents to stay clear of city waterways, saying the water is moving swiftly and is very cold.
