Volunteers paint mural in Fresno neighborhood as part of revitalization. Take a look

Volunteers spent nearly a week to paint a large mural in southwest Fresno that will be the site of a weekly market and potentially a symbol of pride, organizers said Saturday.

The mural came from the Fresno Housing Authority with the help of a number of organizations, local artists and volunteer painters, according to Tyrone Roderick Williams, the CEO of Fresno Housing Authority.

“This is a celebration of our community, of what we are planning for the future, but also a celebration of all that the things that have happened that support sound and stable neighborhoods,” he said.

The mural at 601 E. California Ave. was part of the requirements in a grant for the authority’s West Fresno California Avenue Neighborhood initiative to revitalize west Fresno.

Volunteers gathered Saturday to finish the painting on California near Klette avenues, across from Edison High School.

Project lead Dakari Cleveland said it “can’t really get any better than that” to see the local participation.

The $500,000 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant funding is aimed at the planning process to revitalize the area.

The mural garnered help from Advanced Peace, Idea Works, Fresno County Department of Public Health, Fresno Arts Council and Faith in the Valley.
