A Tulare County 2-year-old was struck and killed by a car after he wandered into the street on a rural road, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

The toddler was in the driveway of a home on Avenue 256 southeast of Visalia about 7:45 p.m. Friday, the CHP said in a news release.

A 27-year-old Lindsay man in a 2016 Nissan was headed east on the avenue, east of Road 159, as he approached the home, according to CHP. There were also two passengers from Porterville in the car.

As the car neared, the boy ran out into the street and was struck, CHP said. The child was taken to Kaweah Health Medical Center, where he later died, officers said.

The driver remained at the scene, CHP said, and was not suspected of being impaired.
