Fire at apartment complex in Fresno displaces nearly 20 people from their homes

A two-alarm apartment fire displaced over a dozen people Sunday in southeast Fresno.

The Fresno Fire Department responded to the fire at 5:15 p.m. at Chestnut and Dearing avenues that started in a utility closet before spreading to an attic of a 10-unit apartment complex, Battalion Chief Brian Downs said.

The fire damaged two units, and crews were able to contain the fire to those rooms.

The fire displaced nineteen people from their homes.

Downs said the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

The units affected by the fire will be boarded.

Downs said there hadn’t been any recent fires at the complex.

Several residents were already outside when fire crews arrived, he said.

“That’s one of our first priorities is to evacuate the residents,” Downs said. “There were several residents in the lower apartments that our units were able to get out safely.”
