A female passenger in a car struck by a train Tuesday evening near Caruthers died of her injures in a hospital, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

The driver, who was killed at the scene, was identified Wednesday by the Fresno County Coroner as Danny Shelton, 48, of Fresno. The woman was not named, pending notification of family.

The CHP earlier reported that Shelton attempted to drive around railroad crossing arms while westbound on Conejo, but was unable to avoid the northbound train. CHP spokesman Mike Salas said the Amtrak passenger train, carrying 1,300 passengers, knocked the man’s Nissan Versa 200 feet. The train came to a stop about three-quarters of a mile away.
