Merced College closed Monday because of a suspicious package found at the main campus

Police tape at crime scene
Law-enforcement officers are investigating a possible shooting near Valentine and Princeton avenues in Fresno Saturday afternoon.

Merced College was closed Monday afternoon because of an “unforeseen emergency,” the campus wrote on social media.

School officials said a suspicious device resembling a small pipe bomb was found near the back of the Merced College main campus in the parking lot behind the Learning Resource Center.

Merced Police and other local authorities examined the suspicious object and determined it was not a threat. No one was harmed, officials said.

The campus was closed for the remainder of the day and the incident remains under investigation.

School officials said classes resumed Tuesday.
