Driver suspected of DUI hits bus with special needs students in Fresno, CHP says
A man was under arrest Wednesday morning for a suspected DUI crash that knocked a bus carrying special needs children onto its side in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The small bus had two children younger than 5 on board as it headed east on Belmont Avenue around 8:10 a.m., Sgt. Miguel Andrade said.
A 34-year-old man driving south on Grantland Avenue ran a stop sign and T-boned the bus, which overturned into its passenger side, slid for about 40 feet and then came to rest on its wheels, he said.
The car continued through the intersection and struck a dump truck, CHP said.
The parents of the children picked up their kids and signed a waiver saying they didn’t need medical help from emergency responders, Andrade said.
The bus driver also denied help to treat a laceration on her hand, he said
The man was arrested and CHP said a drug test was pending.
Andrade at the scene said the bus was headed to a Central Unified school, but district spokesperson Gilbert Magallon emailed The Bee on Wednesday afternoon and said the bus and students on board were not affiliated with Central Unified.
