Update: One of two killed in fiery Madera County crash identified by coroner

Update: The man killed in the single vehicle crash in Madera was identified Wednesday by the Madera County Coroner’s Office while the woman’s name is still under investigation, authorities said.

He was Agustin Ayala, 52, of Santa Nella, the coroner’s office said.

Original story: Two people were killed in a fiery crash Saturday night on Highway 99 in Madera County.

The crash happened at 5:10 p.m. near Avenue 18 1/2, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Kristopher Moreno said.

The driver of a Toyota C-HR was traveling northbound on Highway 99, south of Avenue 18 1/2 at 65 mph, in the No. 2 lane, when for unknown reasons the driver turned the steering wheel to the right and left the road and crashed into a creek embankment.

Moreno said the Toyota overturned and landed on its roof and caught on fire. Good Samaritans tried to help get the man and woman out of the vehicle, but because of the flames, were unable to.

Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity and ages of the victims was not immediately known.

The crash is under investigation. It’s not known if alcohol was a factor in the collision, Moreno said.
