Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and Pastor D. J. Criner were stars of an unorthodox announcement Wednesday night that southwest Fresno will be getting its first Starbucks.

The nation’s most popular coffee shop will be going up at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Church Avenue.

That’s close to where the new Fresno City College West Fresno campus is being built at Church and Walnut avenues.

In the short teaser on Instagram and Twitter, the mayor made reference to a remark made last year by Criner, who reportedly said a sign that the southwest portion of the city was coming into its own would be when it had its own Starbucks.

The news was a hit with Instagram viewers, as well.

Said one: “This just made thousands of future students very happy.”

The opening is planned for 2024, according to the announcement. The West Fresno campus is tentatively set to be fully operational in spring 2024.
