Fiery head-on crash ends with two dead near Corcoran, CHP says. Witnesses tried to help

Two men were killed in a head-on collision that ended with one car engulfed in flames near Corcoran, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.

The driver of a Ford Escape, whose age was not available, was headed north on 10th Avenue north of Niles Avenue before 7 p.m. Tuesday as a 26-year-old was going south in a Toyota Corolla, CHP said.

Officers could not immediately say how fast they were traveling or what caused the crash, but it was evident the cars struck head-on, CHP said.

The Toyota came to rest on the shoulder of the street, and the Ford overturned onto its side before bursting into flames, CHP said. The fire engulfed the car.

Two people stopped and were able to pull the Ford driver out through a sun roof, but both he and the Toyota driver died, CHP said.

The investigation was ongoing.
