Fresno man arrested after ShotSpotter locates gunfire

A man firing a handgun Sunday night in central Fresno became the first person arrested by police using their new ShotSpotter technology.

The system uses acoustic listening devices to pinpoint the location of gunfire. Chief Jerry Dyer announced last week that it was online.

Lt. Joe Gomez said officers went to the 750 block of North First Street at 10:41 p.m. after a shots-fired call was broadcast.

Witnesses pointed out a home in the neighborhood to the officers, who also spotted someone tossing an object from a bedroom window.

A resident, identified as Chanthathong Phouikhambay, admitted to firing the weapon, which was recovered outside. Officers were allowed to search the home and another handgun was recovered, as well as two shotguns.

Phouikhambay was arrested on suspicion of unlawful discharge of a firearm.
