Fresno County road to Hume Lake reopens after rainy weather previously forced its closure
The road to Hume Lake reopened Friday afternoon following a 48-hour effort by the Fresno County’s Office of Emergency Services and a USFS contractor based in Clovis.
Hume Lake Road, also known as 10-mile road, had temporarily closed at its intersection with Highway 180 following heavy rains earlier this week that caused instability along this segment of the road.
Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig said 300 people had been trapped at Hume Lake since Tuesday and were in danger of running out of propane by Saturday.
In addition, more campers were scheduled to arrive to Hume Lake on Friday once the roadway was passable
Magsig said a large section of the road located about a 1/2 mile from the Hume Lake camp was completely washed out by a flooding stream that runs beneath it.
And a culvert needed to be rebuilt.
Approximately 40 semi-truck loads of decomposed granite were hauled up Highway 180 and transported to the site and then compacted to fill in the missing road section.
“It took a major effort to get the road reopened,” Magsig said.
This week’s winter storms had caused significant debris and mud flows in the area, and travel to the district is discouraged.
