Man and girl from Fresno killed in Highway 41 crash into full canal, CHP says. She was 10
Two people including a 10-year-old girl from Fresno were killed when their car left Highway 41 and ended up in a canal full of water, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.
A 45-year-old Fresno woman and her two passengers — the 10-year-old and a 66-year-old man — were headed north on Highway 41 near Quebec Avenue in Kings County before 4 p.m. Wednesday, the CHP said.
She attempted to pass a slower moving big rig while driving a 2016 Mercedes-Benz van on the two-lane section of highway north of Kettleman City, CHP said.
The driver was not able to make it past the big rig and to avoid a head-on collision she swerved to her right, sending the van into the full canal, CHP said.
The van was quickly submerged, CHP said.
A witness stopped and was able to help the driver get out of the water but could not get to the other two passengers, CHP said.
The man and girl were pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said. The driver was flown to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno and was in critical condition.
