Update: Man killed in solo car-shearing crash identified by Fresno County coroner

A man was killed when the car he was driving slammed into a cement canal structure and was torn apart in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said Friday.

The victim was in an Acura TL headed east on Ashlan east of Madsen avenues, which is east of Academy Avenue, at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday before the fatal crash.

It was not immediately clear why the man allowed the Acura to veer off the road onto the northern dirt shoulder, CHP said.

The Acura was ripped in half as it collided with a canal abutment, CHP said, and the man was thrown from the car.

He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center and later died, CHP said.

He was identified Friday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Juan Luis Guevara, 36, of Fresno.

Whether drugs or alcohol were involved was pending a toxicology report, CHP said.
