Bicyclist dies following early morning crash with truck in Fresno on Bullard Avenue

A section of Bullard Avenue was fully closed to traffic Thursday morning following a collision that killed a bicyclist, Fresno police said.

The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. between Cedar and Chestnut avenues.

Traffic was closed in both directions, and police asked drivers to avoid the area or find alternative routes for their morning commutes.

According to Fresno Police Department spokesperson Felipe Uribe, the bicyclist was struck from behind by a truck as both were heading east on Bullard avenue.

The bicyclist, who police said was in his 30s, was taken to the hospital and was initially said to be in critical condition. Police said at about 9:45 a.m. the man had died.

It was not immediately not clear why the truck hit the cyclist, how close the cyclist was riding to the right hand curb and whether visibility was an issue. The truck driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with police, Uribe said.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, he said.

Bullard Avenue remained closed as of 9:45 a.m. Police must conduct a “more intense investigation” as the crash had become fatal, Uribe said.

The street was reopened to traffic in both directions about 11 a.m., police said.
