Highway 41 head-on crash kills teen and child, CHP says. Major injuries to 4 others

Two people including a child were killed late Sunday in a head-on collision that caused major injuries to three other children in Kings County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision took place about 7 p.m. on Highway 41 and Quebec Avenue, where a 2018 Honda Accord collided head-on with a 2006 Honda Odyssey van carrying four children, officer Shasta Tollefson said.

The 19-year-old driver of the Accord was attempting to pass other traffic near a curve and was driving north in the southbound lanes before colliding head-on with the Odyssey driven by a 29-year-old woman, CHP said.

Both vehicles went off the roadway into a ditch about three miles north of Kettleman City, CHP said.

The 19-year-old and a boy in the van were killed in the crash, CHP said. The woman and three children suffered major injuries and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center.

The ages for the children were not immediately available nor were the names of anyone involved, CHP said.
