Man hit and killed in Shaw Avenue crosswalk in Fresno. CHP investigation continues

A man died after he was struck by a car early Saturday while crossing Shaw Avenue in Fresno.

The man was described as a 30-year-old, but otherwise not identified by the California Highway Patrol.

He was in a crosswalk, crossing Shaw at Maroa Avenue, when he was hit about 1:15 a.m. by a Hyundai Sonata going east, Fresno-area CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said.

Preliminary information shows the man “walked directly in the path of the Hyundai and was immediately struck,” Salas said.

He was critically injured and taken to Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno, where he was later pronounced dead.

The woman driving the Hyundai, who wasn’t named, was traveling in the No. 1 lane, closest to the center median, when she struck the pedestrian. The woman was not injured and was cooperative with the investigation, Salas said.

Salas said it’s “unknown if drugs/alcohol were a factor” in the incident, “pending toxicology results” of an autopsy on the man who was killed.

The crash remains under investigation.
