Two young people killed in crash that uprooted tree off Highway 99 in Fresno

Two young adults were killed Saturday morning by an alleged drunk driver in a crash on northbound Highway 99 in Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the crash happened around 6 a.m. A 21-year-old man in a 2015 Hyundai made an unsafe lane change that caused the right-rear of his car to clip the left-front of a 2001 Mitsubishi with a 20-year-old male driver and an 18-year-old female passenger.

The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and veer down an embankment north of McKinley Avenue.

CHP said the Mitsubishi struck a tree at such a force that the tree was uprooted, and the 20-year-old man and 18-year-old woman inside the vehicle died at the scene.

The 21-year-old man in the Hyundai was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to CHP. The Hyundai stopped in a field north of the Mitsubishi after crashing through a fence.

The 21-year-old was transported to Fresno Community Regional Medical Center.

CHP later discovered that the 20-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi was not wearing a seat belt.

One lane of traffic was closed for hours because of the crash.
