Man in critical condition in Fresno after 50-foot fall while hiking, deputies say

A man was in critical condition Wednesday after a fall of about 50 feet while hiking in the Sierra Nevada in eastern Fresno County.

The man fell off a cliff while on a hike with a group about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Edison Lake in an area known as Black Rock Point, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tony Botti.

During the fall of 40 to 50 feet, the man hit his head on a rock, Botti said.

One of the people in the group had first-aid training and was able to reach the man while waiting for rescue, he said.

Fresno County deputies started that way but the area is remote, so the California Highway Patrol H40 helicopter was called in.

The helicopter was not in the air at the time and arrived to assist the man about 11 a.m., and he was flown to Community Regional Medical Center about noon.

His head injury was considered major on Tuesday and he was in critical condition, Botti said.
