Traffic backs up on southbound Highway 99 near Fresno after vehicle catches fire

A car caught on fire on Highway 99 south of Fresno, causing traffic issues late Thursday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the car fire at 5:45 p.m. on Highway 99 near the Merced Street off-ramp.

CHP said the three people inside the vehicle were able to get out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed.

Fire crews responding to the scene to extinguish the fire, but the incident caused traffic to back up on southbound Highway 99 from Fowler to Clovis Avenue, CHP said.
