Fresno woman killed in big rig crash, coroner says. She was at a rural intersection

The woman killed this week after her car was hit by a big rig has been identified, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said Thursday.

A big rig hauling fuel struck a 2020 Honda Fit driven by Guillermina Carapia Lara, 71, of Fresno, killing her on Wednesday, the coroner’s office confirmed.

The fatal collision happened about 6:45 p.m. near Marks and Manning avenues, where the woman stopped at a stop sign, the California Highway Patrol said.

The big rig traveling east on Manning did not have a stop sign and for unknown reasons the woman pulled out in front of the truck, CHP said.

The truck driver, a 54-year-old man, attempted to avoid the collision but struck the driver side of the Honda, CHP said. The truck hauling fuel did not spill or catch fire.

Carapia Lara was wearing a seat belt, CHP said, but was pronounced dead at the scene of the fatal crash. The fuel truck driver was not injured.
