Home burns in central Fresno fire, battalion chief says. It was a ‘total loss’

A large portion of the roof collapsed Monday in a house fire in central Fresno, a battalion chief said.

A caller reported the fire about 10 a.m. on Turner Avenue near Ninth Street, and as crews headed toward the building a plume of black smoke could be seen in the neighborhood near Belmont and Cedar avenues, Battalion Chief Devin McGuire said.

Firefighters eventually learned the owner was out of town and no one was inside, firefighters said.

McGuire estimated about two-thirds of the home was destroyed, calling it a “total loss.” He estimated about $150,000 in damage.

Crews were able to keep flames off three adjacent homes, though one out building and a tree in one neighbor’s yard took fire damage, he said.

No injuries were reported, he said.

The department had an unusual staffing level on Monday, the Fourth of July, because so many calls are expected in the evening.
