Tired of people shooting off illegal fireworks? You’ll appreciate this CHP case
Someone took using illegal fireworks to new lengths Saturday night — but the California Highway Patrol caught them.
Apprehended was a person or persons allegedly responsible for shooting fireworks out of a moving vehicle that started a fire on Highway 198 east of Visalia, according to a CHP Facebook post.
The CHP dispatch center in Fresno received calls at 8:10 p.m. about a fire on the highway near Road 182. Witnesses said a person was shooting fireworks out of a vehicle and caused the fire.
CHP officers were in the area and stopped the vehicle. During the traffic stop, officers noticed packs of roman candles on the floorboard.
The Tulare County Fire Department cited the person and will seek reimbursement for the cost of emergency response to the fire, CHP said.
No other information about the case was immediately available.
CHP sent a warning about illegal fireworks.
“With another drought impacting California, it doesn’t take much to start a fire. Add flying explosives to the mix and you’re just playing with fire (pun intended).” Not only are these types of fireworks prohibited in Tulare County, California’s ‘fire season’ is basically year round now. Additionally, nature really doesn’t need any help starting the next ‘big’ fire.”
