Man riding bike at night is fatally struck in area west of Highway 99 in Fresno
A bicyclist was struck and killed Thursday evening in the area west of Highway 99 in Fresno.
The collision happened before 9 p.m. at West Shaw and North Hayes avenues.
Fresno Police Lt. Sean Biggs said the driver of a dark colored SUV was traveling westbound on Shaw towards Hayes when they noticed the man on the bike in the roadway.
But apparently, the driver didn’t see the bicyclist in time during the night conditions.
“Made attempts to avoid the bicyclist, but unfortunately he was struck,” Biggs said. “He was in the intersection, we just don’t know where.”
The man, described to be in his late 20s or early 30s, landed on the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Biggs said officers are talking to several witnesses, including the SUV driver, who stopped following the crash. Biggs said the SUV driver is cooperating with police.
“We don’t know if speed was a factor,” he said. “We’re pretty sure alcohol wasn’t a factor, but it’s summer time. People seem to be in a big hurry to get to places. All we’re asking folks just be aware of your surroundings, slow down. We rather you make it there in one piece safely so we can avoid things like this.”
The intersection will be closed for three hours.
