Body found in canal in Fresno. Firefighters say it’s been there some time

An irrigation worker reported finding a body in a south Fresno canal on Tuesday, according to the Fresno Fire Department.

The worker discovered the body around 8:30 a.m. in a fenced in area where water transitions from one canal to another near Nielsen and Teilman avenues, firefighters said.

The body had been submerged near a grate for some time. Long enough to have algae growing on it, the department said.

Officials said they had not determined yet Tuesday morning how the body would be removed.

Fresno police Sgt. Diana Trueba Vega said it was too early to determine the gender or age of the person in the gated area.

The discovery comes a day after the body of a man was found in a ponding basin in Fresno.
