Man dies in Fresno after apparent crash along canal bank. What deputies know so far

A man in his 60s died Saturday evening after his vehicle was found partially on the canal bank in southwest Fresno.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. at West Church and South Valentine avenues.

Fresno County Fire crews located the man floating in a canal half a mile down the road. The man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead.

“Per the family, they said there was a party somewhere, and he pulled over here and maybe misjudged it,” Fresno County Sheriff’s Sgt Jeff Hooper said.

Hopper said the cause of the crash remained under investigation early Sunday.

“All we know is that we have one person in the canal and trying to identify if that is actually the driver or owner of the car.”

It was unknown how the man ended up in the canal or whether he lived in the area, but Hopper said the car “might be coming out of Kerman.”

Hooper doesn’t believe anyone else was with the man.
