Elderly man who was biking when fatally struck in north Fresno collision is identified

The 74-year-old man killed Tuesday while riding a bicycle across a major intersection in north Fresno was identified by the county coroner’s office as Frank Romero of Fresno.

Police reported that Romero was riding south on Blackstone Avenue and in the crosswalk when an SUV going east on Herndon Avenue struck him.

The crash occurred just before 5:30 a.m.

It was dark at the time and it remains unclear if the driver or the bicyclist had the right of way, according to police spokeswoman Diana Trueba Vega, who was at the scene.

The driver of the SUV involved in the crash remained on scene and was cooperating with investigators.
