A newer supermarket in Fresno gets damaged after truck burns in loading dock

A newer grocery store in northwest Fresno was evacuated Wednesday evening after a truck in the loading dock that’s at the back of the building caught fire, sending smoke and flames into a portion of the store.

No one was injured at the Papaya Fresh International Market at Shaw and West avenues when the fire started shortly before 5 p.m.

Fresno Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Lopez said one fire truck was originally sent to a car fire, but when that crew arrived, they quickly called for more units for what became a two-alarm fire.

Lopez said it did not appear there was major damage to the store, but crews were evaluating the amount.

Papaya Fresh opened in January 2020 and markets itself as “Fresno’s top supplier of Middle Eastern, Armenian, Indian, Pakistani foods and more” as an “all-in-one stop for ethnic groceries, produce and fresh bread from all over the world.”
