A man in his 50s drowned Saturday during a family outing at Lost Lake Recreation Area, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies and Fresno County Fire responded to Lost Lake, on the San Joaquin River below Friant Dam, around 5:30 p.m. of reports of a man who had gone under water, Sheriff’s Lt. Adam Esmay said.

The Sheriff’s Office helicopter located the man under water next to a rock and rescue teams reached him around 6:04 p.m.

He was taken to Saint Agnes Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Esmay said the man did not have a life jacket on.

“I don’t know the circumstances why he went under,” he said.
