Fresno nurse organizes Ukraine relief effort. Here’s how you can help

Mykhaylo Skitsak, a nurse at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, is keeping an eye on the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine as he helps organize a local relief effort for those trapped in the war-torn country.

“With every single meeting, it doesn’t seem things go very far,” he said Wednesday. “The Russian delegation left immediately (after) the talks. Other aggressors are watching,” he added. That makes him concerned that other bad actors on the world stage will also be encouraged to use violence to accomplish their goals.

4 MILLION UKRAINIANS HAVE FLED

The United Nations reported Wednesday that 4 million Ukrainians have fled the conflict, but Skitsak is hopeful that he can at least do something to help the refugees as he gathers items in a shipping container to send to Poland for distribution in western Ukraine.

He also is involved in local prayer vigils for Ukrainians and organizing a partnership with the City of Fresno as part of the aid campaign.

Skitsak was last in Ukraine in 2019, but he keeps in daily contact with friends and family there. He said some Ukrainians fleeing the battles have already passed through Fresno, but doesn’t know of any refugees settling in the area.

Items sought for the relief package include clothing, bandages, blankets, infant formula and other goods. Cash also is needed, as sending the container is expected to cost about $6,000. The collection point is 1501 Broadway on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
