Update: Caruthers students out of hospital after suspected overdoses. Sheriff rules out fentanyl

UPDATE: The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office on Monday said the two students, a 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl, have been released from the hospital.

The sheriff’s office also said it has determined the two teens were not exposed to fentanyl as originally believed.

“We do not have a definitive answer as to what type of substance they were exposed to, however, we have been able to rule out Fentanyl,” sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti said in an email.

ORIGINAL STORY: Two students at Caruthers High are being treated for possible overdoses Friday afternoon, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

The two students, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were found about 2:40 p.m. in a bathroom on campus, sheriff’s office spokesman Tony Botti said.

One student was found unconscious, Botti said.

Both were administered doses of Narcan and taken to a hospital, Botti said.

Botti said fentanyl exposure is suspected.

“Our focus is the condition of the kids, what they took and where they got the substance from,” Botti said.

A sheriff’s office response team was headed to the school to investigate.

The condition of the students were not immediately known.
