Doug-Out Cookies, one of Fresno’s favorite cookie makers, is closing its doors after 25 years in business.

The owners, Doug Low and Marsha Eichholtz, said in a statement Monday that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and staffing shortages had taken its toll on the business.

“We have not been able to keep up the quality of our product or service. We have had some wonderful, wonderful years and we want to thank all of our customers for the privilege of serving them,” the statement said.

Doug-Out’s last day at its store in the Fashion Fair food court will be April 30. It moved into the space last summer. The store was previously located on Fresno Street and Alluvial Avenue.

Eichholtz said they will start downsizing the existing line of baked goods. Doug-Out was known for its chocolate chip, snickerdoodle and tea cake cookies with white frosting and sprinkles.

Low and Eichholtz started the bakery while pursuing their legal careers. He was an attorney and she was a paralegal. They retired from their law practice in 2015 and had turned the day-to-day operations over to their trusted employees Icker Torres, a 24-year-employee and Sky Valenzuela, an employee for 15 years.

“They’ve been breaking their backs keeping the shop running,” Eichholtz said.
