Fresno County added over 4,000 jobs in November and saw a decline in unemployment, according to state employment data.
Trade, transportation, and utilities jobs saw the greatest increases.
And while the unemployment rate in Fresno County declined in November, it still remains higher than the state average.
As of November, Fresno County’s unemployment rate was 7%, down from 7.7% in October, while the state’s overall unemployment rate was 5.4% and the nation’s was 3.9% during the same period, according to the Employment Development Department.
Employment rates are higher in Fresno County than they were a year ago, when estimates put the unemployment rate around 8.5% in November 2020. But a recent survey by UC Merced shows that loss of income is still a major concern for more than 30% of Fresno city voters.
Which sectors are growing the fastest in Fresno?
News of the additional jobs came last week in a monthly report from the Employment Development Department.
That same month, total industry employment increased by 2,000 jobs to a total of 401,300. Non-farm employment rose by 4,200 jobs, or 1.2%.
The industries that saw the most growth in Fresno County were: trade, transportation, and utilities, which increased by 2,600 jobs in November.
Retail trade saw significant gains, adding 1,500 jobs. Transportation, warehousing, and utilities expanded by 900 jobs, and wholesale trade added 200 jobs.
The public sector added over 1,000 jobs in November — local government, 700, federal government, 200, and state government, 100.
Educational and health services added 300 jobs — 200 in health services and 100 in educational services. Farm employment, which typically experiences a seasonal decline in the fall, dropped 2,200 jobs, or 5.6%.
Fresno County estimates show that there are five industries expected to grow in Fresno County over the next five years.
Based on a 2019 analysis of state employment data, the Fresno County Economic Development Corporation projects that the top five industries expected to grow in the county over the next five years. Here are the industries expected to see growth:
- Ambulatory health care services
- Transportation and warehousing
- Social assistance
- Waste management and remediation services
- Food and alcohol services
