Highway 99 traffic in Fresno snarled by big rig on its side. Avoid the area, CHP says

Traffic on Highway 99 in Fresno was backed up for miles Thursday morning after a big rig overturned and blocked a part of the roadway, according to California Highway Patrol.

About 6 a.m. the big rig pulling a box truck was struck by a vehicle on the highway near the Olive Avenue exit before the big rig ended up on its side, CHP said.

The big rig came to rest in the fast lane, against the southbound center median, CHP said. A third car was struck in the crash, but the drivers of all three vehicles escaped with minor or moderate injuries, CHP said.

The other two lanes of the roadway were moving but traffic was slow all the way back to Herndon Avenue, according to Officer Mike Salas.

The big rig needs to be pulled back onto its tires, which will mean the entire highway will be closed during that process, Salas said.

“If you can avoid 99 between Olive and Herndon, it would be a good idea,” he said.

CHP officers are dealing with multiple crashes in Fresno and the foothills as the area is seeing rain and snow, according to officers.
