A Fresno State student was struck and killed early Saturday morning in a hit-and-run on Highway 180 in Fresno.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s office confirmed Devan Nicole Elayda died after pulling over on the freeway about 2:45 a.m. and exiting her vehicle before she was struck by a passing motorist.

The California Highway Patrol reported that Elayda was driving a Scion TC that stopped in the median on eastbound 180 east of Cedar Avenue. Investigators believe Elayda got out of the car intending to switch seats with a passenger. Elayda had stepped into the No. 1 lane when she was hit by a silver or gray Lexus sedan. Elayda was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elayda, 23, is originally from Hollister.

The driver of the Lexus sped on without attempting to contact law enforcement, CHP said. Investigators are seeking information about the incident and the Lexus (possibly a 2017-2020 IS series) and its driver. The Lexus likely has damage on the driver’s side front bumper, hood or fender. Call the Fresno Area CHP office at 559-262-0400 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867 or valleychrimestoppers.org. You will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
