Weekend snowfall slows activity of Sequoia wildfire. A hotshot crew enters Giant Forest
A weekend snow storm blanketed much of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park — including areas affected by the KNP Complex Fire.
More than two inches of snow still covered portions of the area Monday night and significantly slowed activity during the day.
The National Park Service shared pictures from Grant Grove on Tuesday.
In one, a cabin sits among trees, heavy with snow. The ground is covered white.
The National Park Service helped with plowing, road clearing and tree removals so fire crews could access areas needing mitigation, including those along the Generals Highway. Even through the snow, a hotshot crew was able to enter the area below the Giant Forest and initiate contingency line construction, according to fire officials Tuesday morning.
The KNP Complex has now been burning for more than a month, covering 88,184 acres. As of Tuesday, it was 55% contained.
Firefighters on Tuesday worked to keep the fire down-canyon from Atwell Grove (north of Mineral King Road), south of the Kaweah River and west of Mineral Springs.
Windy Fire 91% contained
To the south, rain helped keep activity on the Windy Fire to a minimum on Monday. It also made some areas too wet for fire crews to access. A section of perimeter line on the east side of the fire was verified as contained on Monday, increasing the overall containment to 91%. The fire has burned 97,554.
Total containment is expected Nov. 1.
