Two ejected from SUV in deadly rollover crash near highways 99 and 41 in Fresno
A man and woman were ejected from their SUV during a deadly rollover crash that backed up traffic for a couple of hours Friday in south Fresno.
California Highway Patrol said the woman, identified as 41-year-old Stephanie Gaota of Fresno, died at the scene and the man suffered major injuries after their Chevy Envoy overturned several times around 3:15 p.m. near Highway 99 and Highway 41.
CHP Sgt. Del Carro said the Envoy was traveling southbound on Highway 99, weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed before taking the transition road onto Highway 41.
The driver, identified as Gaota, then jerked the wheel to the left over the dirt embankment and came down to Highway 99, Del Carro said.
The SUV overturned several times before hitting a Toyota Prius.
Del Carro said the woman and male passenger weren’t wearing seat belts.
The man was transported to Community Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the Toyota Prius was not injured.
Traffic was stopped on southbound 99 and was backed up to Fresno Street before reopening around 5:30 p.m.
