How did a dog from Fresno end up with Miley Cyrus? ‘It is just like a Cinderella story’
Singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus has always been fond of dogs.
More particularly towards bulldogs and pit bulls.
When The Wagmor Luxury Pet Hotel & Spa in Studio City/Valley Village posted a picture on Instagram of a bulldog from Fresno, Cyrus immediately took notice of the stray.
“She kept asking me about her,” said Wagmor owner Melissa Bacelar, who’s also a celebrity pet psychic. “She said ‘I don’t think she’s right for my house. What do you think if I bring her to the set? I bet we can find her a home’”
Bacelar was OK with that and Cyrus brought the bulldog, named Daisy, to her video shoot for “Midnight Sky.”
Bacelar said “everyone fell in love with her.”
But Cyrus wanted to spend more time with Daisy and kept her for a week. She later told Bacelar: I can’t live without this dog because she’s so sweet.
Cyrus adopted Daisy, now named Kate Moss, on July 24.
“She sends me a picture everyday,” Bacelar said.
Daisy took a long, winding road from Fresno to the celebrity.
Miley Cyrus adopted dog’s time in Fresno
It was April 20 when the bulldog showed up to Station 58 at the North Central Fire District, west of highway 99.
Capt. Lucian Neely said she was “covered in fleas and smelled terrible.”
He knew she was an abandoned stray. The firefighters wondered if she would leave, but she remained at the firehouse.
Daisy even felt enough at home that she slept on the station’s back door mat.
“She would run around to the front every time we pulled the engine back in,” Neely said. “She would follow us all around the outside of the station.”
He attempted to get animal control to pick her up, but staffing issues and slashed hours because of the coronavirus pandemic prevented that from happening, Neely said.
He sent a picture to his wife and they talked and remembered his brother, Donovan, had a female bulldog that passed away.
“He loves bulldogs,” Neely said.
Bulldog’s path to Miley Cyrus
Neely first took Daisy to his Stockton home and then to his brother’s house. His brother took over fostering the dog and posted pictures in hopes of finding her a forever home.
A family friend, Melanie Weber, fell in love with the dog, but couldn’t taker her in because she already had two dogs at home in Thornton, south of Elk Grove on Interstate 5. She also noticed Daisy had “many medical issues that would cost $3,000” to help her get better.
Weber reached out for help in hopes of finding the dog another home.
“She was such a sweetheart,” she said. “It was a real challenge. Nobody wanted her. I was trying to find her a home.”
That’s when Weber heard about The Wagmor from a niece who had seen it featured on the “Ellen Degeneres Show.” Celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Arianna Grande and Kris Jenner have adopted dogs from the business.
Weber then drove Daisy to the Wagmor facility in Studio City, where she was told by workers that Daisy had to be taken immediately to a veterinarian in Simi Valley.
The dog received all the medical care it needed.
Officials said she was abused and was used as a breeding dog and indeed abandoned.
The Wagmor then posted a picture of Daisy on its Instagram account.
Home at last
Cyrus noticed the pictures of Daisy on the Wagmor’s Instagram account. She already had another dog at her home, Bacelar said. But she was interested in Daisy and after a few weeks decided to keep her.
“Daisy doesn’t like to be away from her,” Bacelar said. “We’re hoping it works out forever. She’s not giving up this dog.”
Neely was hoping the dog would find a permanent home. Little did he realize, it was going to be a star singer opening her home to Daisy.
“Obviously surprised,” he said. “Our goal was just to make sure that she would be healthy and loved. I honestly believe she would have been dead in a matter of days if we didn’t do anything.
“When the picture was first texted to me, I couldn’t believe it was Miley. I actually looked at the tattoos on her hands and started Google image searching to see of they matched. Then I followed the Wagmor Instagram page and saw the posts confirming it.”
Weber likewise was surprised to learn Daisy was brought home by Cyrus.
“Oh my god. I was just freaking out,” she said. “It is just like a Cinderella story. All these people passed her up because she was a big problem. I was going crazy. What are the odds a sick dog with horrible teeth would end up living like a princess?”
