Deputies kill knife-wielding man who held woman, kids hostage, Merced County sheriff says

A knife-wielding man who held a woman and children in a Dos Palos home was shot to death by deputies early Sunday, Merced County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Details are preliminary.

Deputies arrived about 3 a.m. at a home on Ida Street near Millux Avenue, where the man threatened to stab the woman and three children in the neck, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.

The woman and children were in a bedroom as the man paced a hallway in front of the room and held two kitchen knives.

The man threatened to attack the woman and children if deputies entered the home. The deputies spoke to the man for nearly an hour, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The man rushed into the room where the victims were before deputies shot the suspect through a bedroom window, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The woman and children were removed from the home and deputies began life-saving efforts on the man, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He died at the scene.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Bureau is working on identifying the man and notifying next of kin before releasing his name.

Deputies have not said whether the victims and the suspect were related.
