A man who tried to rescue three children from the Kings River on Wednesday has died.

According to Reedley police, around 7:15 p.m. emergency personnel responded to two victims in the water in the area of Reedley Beach.

Reedley Fire crews — who were in the area for training — located and rescued an 8-year-old girl. Two other children made it out of the water safely.

Authorities learned that 29-year-old Manjeet Singh, identified Thursday, tried to help the children. Cmdr. Marc Ediger of the Reedley Police Department said Singh jumped in the water and “went under” quickly.

Singh was found downstream after emergency personnel searched for an hour.

The girl was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital. She was listed in critical condition as of Wednesday evening, Ediger said.

Singh was pronounced dead at a hospital. It was not clear Thursday where he lived.
