Merced

A head-on collision Saturday evening in Fresno County sent two drivers to the hospital with major injuries, according to California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred around 8:40 p.m. in the area of Highway 41 and East Elkhorn Avenue when man driving a Kia Optima made an unsafe pass on Southbound 41 and collided head-on with a woman driving a Honda Civic that was going Northbound on the highway, CHP sergeant Matt Radke said.

That stretch of the highway consists of one lane in each direction, and no barrier or island in the median to separate the two.

Three other passengers in the Kia were also taken to the hospital. A third vehicle was also involved when a man’s Toyota Corolla was struck by the crash.

The passengers and the other driver was also transported with minor to moderate injuries, Radke said.

Traffic in both directions was stopped for about 20 minutes before it being diverted from Elkhorn Avenue.
