One dead after fiery Interstate 5 crash near Kettleman City early Saturday

One woman was found dead in a burned car early Saturday along Interstate 5 near Kettleman City in western Kings County.

The incident was originally reported as a grass fire about 3 a.m. on I-5 near Milham Avenue, north of Kettleman City, said California Highway Patrol Officer Bryan Torres. When officers arrived, they discovered a car engulfed in flames at the bottom of an embankment in the freeway median.

After the fire was put out by Kings County Fire Department, a body was found inside the car. Officer Maurice Teliha said it is believed that the victim was a woman whose identity has not been disclosed.

The vehicle, a red 2009 Toyota Yaris, had been traveling north on the freeway. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
