Woman, 26, dies after vehicle goes airborne and lands in Fresno County canal

A Kerman woman was killed Friday night when her vehicle went airborne and landed in the middle of a canal near Biola, the California Highway Patrol said.

She was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as 26-year-old Rachelle Lopez-Coronado.

About 9 p.m., the CHP said Lopez-Coronado was eastbound on Shaw Avenue at a high rate of speed when the 2013 Toyota veered to the left and went across the westbound lane onto the north shoulder of the roadway.

The vehicle hit a dirt embankment, went airborne into the canal and wound up on its roof and submerged off Shaw and east of Goldenrod Avenue, the CHP said. Biola is about 16 miles west of Fresno.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team found Lopez-Coronado inside the vehicle.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
