Sacramento-area man drowns after jumping off boat in Bass Lake, deputies say

A man from the Sacramento area drowned Saturday afternoon in Bass Lake, deputies said.

The victim, who was in his 60s, reportedly jumped off his family’s boat while holding a flotation device. But for unknown reasons, he slipped beneath the surface.

An off-duty nurse saw the commotion, jumped in and helped family members bring the man back onto the boat, where CPR was started, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies, called to the area near Lake View Estates about 3:30 p.m., arrived via boat and took over life-saving efforts until emergency medical services workers arrived.

The man, whose name had not been released, was pronounced dead at 4 p.m.

Alcohol was not a factor, deputies say.
