Central Valley counties continue adding COVID-19 cases. Fresno reports more deaths

More than 100 new COVID-19 cases in the San Joaquin Valley were reported on Friday.

Fresno County reported 66 new cases and three new deaths. That brings Fresno’s total count up to 2,080.

Tulare County announced 33 new cases, and Merced added 14 new cases. Madera County added 14 new cases.

Fresno also reported three additional deaths on Friday, bringing the county’s total up to 43. Tulare County still leads the region with coronavirus deaths. Those deaths mostly are from nursing homes.

Data shows the the San Joaquin Valley region has not flattened its curve as counties and the state continue to reopen additional sectors of the economy. But, health officials insist hospital capacity — specifically intensive care unit capacity — remains viable.

“If all of these different data that we’re reporting reflect an uptick in the number of cases, or our hospital capacity is somehow compromised or stressed, then that will basically mean that the state will focus more attention on us and work with us to see how we can implement processes to get ourselves back on track,” Dr. Rais Vohra, Fresno County’s interim health officer, said on Friday.
