Firefighters find man not breathing inside burned Fresno apartment. He later died

UPDATE: The Fresno County Coroner’s Office reported the apartment dweller’s death Saturday afternoon. He was identified as Robert Martinez, 71, of Fresno. No other details were available.

An apartment fire in northwest Fresno put a man in the hospital Friday night.

According to Battalion Chief Mike Gilbert, around 7:30 p.m. fire crews responded to a call of a fire at the Newporter Apartments near the intersection at Bullard and Marks avenues.

Crews discovered a fire raging in the attic of the complex and a victim inside who did not appear to be breathing.

Crews immediately got the man outside and performed CPR before taking him to a hospital. His condition was unknown.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
